Post-hardcore/progressive genius.

3. Follow Enter Shikari on Twitter.

Album Artwork Sucks.

Okay, little bit of a rant today. Not that I’m really a fan of Boys Like Girls, because I’m not, but I just saw the artwork for their new album Love Drunk posted on AbsolutePunk. Have a Look:

Really? Really?! Okay let’s break this down.

Color Scheme:
Hey guys.. what would be a good color for our album? Oo I know! How about let’s use all the colors of the upcoming season fall! It will be like so purdyfull! Fail.

Pattern: Clearly the artist downloaded a free pack of ten photoshop brushes, probably with a title something like “artsy”  or “splatter”. They then decided to just stamp every brush randomly on the page. Well done. How long did that take ten minutes?

Design: Hey guys how can we show the emotion of our music on our album cover? Oo I know! Let’s put a heart on it, cause like love you know? And then..let’s have the heart crying! Cause it will be all emotional and stuff! Hold up, this isn’t arsty enough let’s draw some like thermometers and little people on it. Wow. Just wow.

Font: Did you know that photoshop let’s you change the font?

Yep so well done, another brilliant album cover.

Love,
Sam

Save Your Scissors - City and Colour

Perfect end of summer tunes if you ask me. City and Colour, Alexisonfire singer Dallas Green’s side project, is really something different. A dramatic turn from post-hardcore band, Alexisonfire, City and Colour is has acoustic-centered folkish sound. In 2005 this project released a full length entitled Sometimes. The album is honestly, awesome. The vocals are crazy good, and his voice quality goes well with the acoustic guitar setting. It is also a display of some pretty kick ass songwritting. City and Colour have also put out several EPs and another LP, Bring Me Your Love, but the first album is definitley the one to pick up if you’re new to the sound.

Band/Sensory overload….

Soo, I’m getting pretty stoked. I’m going to Warped Tour in the morning to witness the year of the post-hardcore band. Also the year of shitty synth bands, but that’s another story.. We’ll see what the schedule allows but I’m planning on for sure checking out Scary Kids Scaring Kids, Chiodos, and Saosin..and maybe P.O.S…we’ll see. OK I’m off to catch as many Zzz’s as I can.

Love,
Sam

Ps- I’ll post a video review of Warped next week sometime.

The Limit Express - Amskray

I’ve had Amskray’s EP Start a Culture in my music library for a while but just got a full listen a few weeks ago. Amskray is, as of now, unsigned, but don’t let that fool you. These guys rock. This indie-prog New Jersey band is like a mellow Mars Volta at times with effortless high range vocals and melodic tapping guitars. I’m hooked. Give them a chance, in fact give them two chances, they deserve it.

Other must-listen tracks:
Nah just listen to the whole thing, it’s only an EP lazy.

Stuck in my head today:
I’ve Got Friends - Manchester Orchestra

So you may or may not be aquainted with the band Manchester Orchestra, but the other day I picked up a copy of their latest album Mean Everything to Nothing. Wow. Awesome. Please promptly drop whatever the hell you’re doing and listen to these guys if you haven’t already. The album flows smoothly when played front-to-back but the individual tracks rule on their own as well. I would describe their sound as classic pop/rockish.. with doses of modern awesomeness. Their old CD I’m Like a Virgin Losing a Child is quite a gem as well, but their latest effort shines a little brighter in my book. I’m checkin ‘em out next week in Chicago at Lollapalooza so I’ll put up a review of their set at some point. Enjoy.
